Roots, Rock, Reggae

The legend song with a legend voice Bob Marley and The Wailers. I have few favourites form the man but that is certainly the best way to describe this past weekend. And ironically on Saturday night before I left my cave there was a documentary on Bob on the telly. Very interesting! I also have to say the new Facebook sucks serious ass as I’m used to work from my phone and had fright with the new look of FB when I went onto a computer. Really? Are you guys so bored there at FB head quarters? I need an instruction manual please so that I can prepare myself next time. This is what I love about Twitter, none of that BS….any-fricking-way
Friday I spent some time with good friends in Sabie, the location is “secretive” but what I can tell you we played a dice game, I drank way too much red wine and at least celebrated our braai heritage a day earlier. My good friends are always entertaining and even though we missed a few friendly faces we will make up for it.

After our return from Sabie I spent an hour cleaning my little MJ (Marley Junior aka my car) as she was full of red mud. Yes we had our first spring rain and after so many weeks of nice warm sunshine weather we were back into our jerseys for most of last week. After the big clean up (for me as well) I got ready for Earthdance! Yes what a kick ass party! Big round applause for Raquel and everyone who helped her! This ED is certainly not one I’m going to forget soon.

I picked up my “date” for the evening, my ever colourful friend Binx and we travelled up to White River. The parking was so full I parked near the R40 and almost needed a lift to the Casterbridge centre. Why you ask my humble friend well because Freshlyground was at Barnyard theatre raising money for the same cause as ED, WESSA to help the fight again rhino poaching. We finally arrived at the door and were greeted by the lovely door ladies and my good friend Lee. He was proud of his “jungle juice” which brought in a little extra cash to the cause of the night and it was humbly enjoyed by most people. The night was still young and I caught up with Anna Mart, her daughter Sune and Beanie the legend herself from Blue Moon (and she is only 15 now). Also had a chat with my friends, Smook (Voetstoots and Justin Swart band) and Faantie (Justin Swart band) with the exciting news they have been added to the STRAB reunion line up at Blue Moon that is happening later in October.

Roelof "Quintero" Loots just improves with time, he has really captured in his Spanish guitar playing. Young Michael Strydom (17 years old) also had the crowd going with his covers from Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix and more “golden oldies” as one girl said behind me. The younger girlies loves the young talented guitar player in his skinny jeans; watch out Michael there is a female fan club rising. My Aching Monotone with Ewald huge wig was not to be missed. I still love his song “Lief vir my Taal” (I love my language) so original and of course his song for his unborn child is still beautiful. Next up was the even popular, No One’s Arc, Miss Law had brought her new fiancĂ© down from Pretoria for us all to meet and to show him a bit what the home town(s) crowd is made of. The show was powerful and full of jumping up and down as always with a dirty tore boxer shorts being thrown onto stage. I’m just glad that thing missed me by a few millimeters. A lot of new songs were sung like “Ambulance”, “Paved in gold”, “Dress to kill” and also a few older songs like “Fire” and “Stanley”. I will always the love the response they receive when they play in front of their home crowd.

After Dylan and Robby drum solo (something you just have to see live) it was time for that ice cold beer and the Tidal Waves to set up. If you have not seen these guys live yet what is wrong with you? They great guys even they are Rastafarian it doesn’t matter very nice guys. Had a quick talk with Jinx and Sam from the band before their show, I watched from the back of the crowd.

Binx and I sneaked off before the show ended and the cops start to realize where the parties are at. Safely at home a warm bed was welcomed as it was raining outside.

Sunday night traditional at Pappas was great as ever with Sol, Smook and Faantie jamming together. If you have not joined in for at least one Sunday and you are a local what is wrong with you? Who wants to watch a Sunday movie when you got this great music and pizza right on your door step?

This Sunday (2nd of October) we will be opening the month of rock with a legend, Valiant Swart at Umbali. I did an exchange with Simi so I will get two tickets to the show, you can still get your tickets at Harry Green Music world for R70 p/p and there is still a little bit left. It is a sun downer, the gates open at and the music will probably start around the same time. 3 of the local bands are opening for this show which is not limited to My Aching Monotone, Roelof "Quintero" Loots and Voetstoots. Fancy a lazy afternoon then come join in, you welcome to bring your own picnic baskets however no private liquor (damn!). You can go to Umbali website and find out more about this event and others to come up like Halloween! Mwahahaha…sorry I get carried away.

The next biggest party at Blue Moon of course is the STRAB reunion weekend which starts on Friday 21 October till Sunday 23 October. The rugby will be broadcast straight from the stage bar so if you are a great Bok supporter (hmm…Victor Matfield) like I am then you will have no trouble watching the game. There will be space again for you to camp and chill out between the kuiering. We have a great Saturday afternoon line up and this is the kind of vibe at STRAB. The only thing missing is the beach and surf but I promise you the “gees” will not be missing. STRAB is a great music festival and for us from Nelsparta area it’s a stone throw away into Mozambique where STRAB is based. You can get your hands on the tickets from Steak and Ale website under their “events tab” and then buy tickets. Also for the Nelspartans you can go to Look and Listen in Riverside Mall (Nelsparta) and buy your tickets there. Of course just keep an eye out on my tweets or that of Blue Moon and as always just simply like their FB page and get all the news straight to your news feed. Full weekend packages will of course be for sale and the days apart so if you can only come and join us for the Friday or Saturday no problems we shall provide!

Ticket prices as follows (accourding to the STRAB booking email I got) – it includes camping as well so worth it!

R 250 for the whole festival – Friday to Sunday
R 100 for just Friday night (you can pass out and leave Saturday morning)
R 200 for just Saturday night (you can pass out and leave on Sunday morning)

The line up is very good, lots of artist that you only get to see at music festivals so if you really a fan of anything blues, rock, reggae, acoustic, steel guitar, jazz, alternative and bit of punk then this show is for you. The line up as far is at follows:

(and more to come according to Conrad)

Personally I will Dan Patlansky, aKing and Mr. Cat & The Jackal

Then in the last post I had “mentioned” that I’m will be on the 6th Avontoer! Awe! (Sorry Deez I can’t spell your version of it) and I’m really looking forward to it! If you want to come onto Avontoer you simply go to this website and write them a motivation why you should be on there. You can be anyone, any colour, any language because music has no boarders. Its first come first serve basis and the bus is filling up like craze so the sooner you kick into gear the better!
Their bands have not been announced yet but if it’s a line up like in the previous ones then sjoe it’s going to be one hectic party!

This weekend remember is Valiant Swart at Umbali and if you are open tonight Pronk! In Murray Street  (two houses up from the top parking lot at Village Spar) is holding an open mic night. These nights are something to attend and the musicians, poets and paintings are a trend that is starting to grow popular! It starts around and the entry is free.

A new “inception” that I will be bringing into the blog soon is a sit down with some of Nelsparta and area local muso’s. No I don’t like asking the same old boring questions but it will be interesting and I have my first appointment next week. Keep an eye out for it and if there are any questions you like me to ask any of the bands just drop me a tweet or email on smalltownmusicblog@gmail.com I’m looking forward to do this and it can only be supported by their fans. One by one I will get them and I want to cover those craze DJ friends of mine as well (watch out Don! LOL)

Till later alligators!
