Good Times Clothing – representing Mpumalanga

By Marley

“The thing about hip-hop today is it's smart, it's insightful. The way they can communicate a complex message in a very short space is remarkable.” - Barack Obama

Nelsparta is not only rock ‘n roll, hippies and pop singers but also the cool catz of hip/hop and rap. We have a treasure chest yet to be truly discovered by the rest of the nation. The honest truth is that my knowledge of the genre is limited. But at least I know what the difference is between Jay Z and any other side cap wearing guy with a microphone. South African hip hop is actually different to the USA and I think we have given its own flavour. We have mixed up our languages, our musicians and I’m still waiting for the day that a hip hop song featuring Francios van Coke to hit our music players.

Hip Hop has been around for few years, you might remember those days when Shaggy was “Mister Boombastic” and the only thing cooler than LL Cool J was your Monster Hits tape collection. In dancing the format of hip hop is part of dance competitions along with the foxtrot and the rumba. But these days it has moved up, it got higher than just street credit. It has CEO’, MEC’s and the rest of the followers wearing grooving clothes, caps and no heavy jewellery.

But with music each got its own set of style in clothes and this where Good Times Clothing come in. Two legends in the hip hop world here in Mpumalanga, Philani "Pillz" Ngcobo and Phinda "Goofy" Magagula started the company. Their clothing brand dresses anyone from any culture, any town, any city, any genre. This brand resembles something we all agree on a good time. I always think of the saying “They say drinking is bad for you but then again no good story begins with ‘That one time when I was having a salad…’” - this resembles on how a good time started somewhere with a beer, a visit from a friend, a concert, an ice cold soda next to the swimming pool.

Phinda "Goofy" Magagula
Goofy is no stranger to Nelspartans, you might recognise him from No One’s Arc where he played the trombone and trumpet. But since the band relocated to Cape Town in 2012, Phinda stayed in Nelsparta to build up his studio, One Room Entertainment and sound engineering company Akang Sound. He doesn't let the grass grow under his feet; no he is also studying business management at Boston City Campus. He records, mixes and produces not only rap, hip hop and R&B artists and music but his own music as well.

Then there is Pillz, he too is busy man. He is currently the head of music at One Room Entertainment as well as one of the biggest producers for hip hop in Mpumalanga. Together they put their heads together and started Good Times Clothing.

From all the items you see you can order from their Facebook page or by dropping Goofy an email. They deliver locally and their prices are very reasonable.

At Small Town Music we not only support the music but brands like Good Time Clothing because local is lekker, local is just as good as any China product. We need more guys like Pillz and Phinda because they are role models for everyone out there. You can make it, you just need to take the opportunity that is front of you even if it as small as a mustard seed.

“Remind yourself, nobody’s built like you. You design yourself” – Jay Z
